How to Play Baccarat – Rules, Card Values, Bets & Beginner’s Guide

Baccarat is a popular casino card game built around a simple objective: predict which of two hands, known as the Player and Banker, will finish closest to nine. Despite its reputation as a high-stakes casino game, the basic rules are relatively straightforward.

In this Casinos Like guide, we explain how baccarat works, the differences between Player, Banker and Tie bets, how cards are scored, when a third card is drawn and what the standard payouts mean. You can also use our interactive baccarat calculator and free practice game to explore the rules without wagering money.

Important: Baccarat is a game of chance. Neither the Player nor Banker outcome can be reliably predicted. Betting systems and previous results do not remove the house edge. Our interactive tools use virtual cards and involve no real-money gambling.

What Is Baccarat?

Baccarat is a comparing-card game in which two hands are dealt: the Player hand and the Banker hand. Participants place bets on which hand they believe will win, or whether both hands will finish with the same total.

In the widely played Punto Banco variation, players do not decide whether to hit or stand. The drawing rules are automatic, meaning the result is determined by the cards dealt rather than by individual playing decisions.

The Objective

Predict whether the Player or Banker hand finishes closer to nine, or whether the hands tie.

Card Values

Aces count as one, cards 2–9 use their face value, and 10s and picture cards count as zero.

Winning Hand

The hand closest to nine wins. Only the final digit of the card total is counted.

How to Play Baccarat Step by Step

  1. Choose a baccarat table. Check the game variation, minimum stakes, payout rules and commission structure.
  2. Select a betting outcome. Choose Player, Banker or Tie. These are betting labels rather than decisions about which hand you control.
  3. Two cards are dealt to each hand. The Player and Banker totals are calculated using baccarat scoring.
  4. Check for a natural. If either initial two-card hand totals eight or nine, both hands normally stand.
  5. Apply third-card rules. If there is no natural, additional cards may be drawn according to fixed Punto Banco rules.
  6. Compare the final totals. The hand closest to nine wins. If the totals match, the result is a tie.
  7. Settle the bet. Winning wagers are paid according to the table’s rules.

Baccarat Card Values Explained

Baccarat uses a different scoring system from blackjack. Each hand is scored using the final digit of the sum of its card values.

Card Baccarat Value Example
Ace 1 Ace + 5 = 6
2–9 Face value 3 + 4 = 7
10, Jack, Queen, King 0 King + 8 = 8
Totals above 9 Final digit only 7 + 8 = 15, scored as 5

For example, a hand containing a nine and a six has a combined value of 15, which becomes a baccarat total of five. A hand containing an eight and an ace totals nine.

Understanding Baccarat Bets

Player Bet

Wins when the Player hand finishes closer to nine than the Banker hand. Standard payout: 1:1.

Banker Bet

Wins when the Banker hand finishes closer to nine. Standard commission baccarat usually charges 5% on Banker winnings, producing a net payout of 0.95:1.

Tie Bet

Wins when both hands finish with the same total. A common payout is 8:1, although some tables offer different terms.

Important distinction: Betting on Banker does not mean you become the dealer or control the Banker hand. Both hands are dealt automatically according to the game’s rules.

Baccarat Payouts and House Edge

The house edge is the casino’s theoretical long-run advantage. In standard eight-deck Punto Banco with a 5% Banker commission, the following figures are commonly used.

Bet Standard Net Payout Approximate House Edge
Banker 0.95:1 1.06%
Player 1:1 1.24%
Tie 8:1 14.36%

Figures are approximate and apply to standard eight-deck commission baccarat. No-commission variants, alternative Tie payouts and side bets may have different house edges.

Enter an example stake and choose a baccarat bet to see the standard potential profit and total return if the selected outcome wins.

Net profit if successful £9.50
Total return including stake £19.50

Understanding Your Bet

A £10 Banker bet pays £9.50 profit after standard commission, plus the original £10 stake.

The calculator assumes standard Punto Banco payouts, including 5% Banker commission and 8:1 Tie. It does not predict results or place real-money bets.

When Is a Third Card Drawn in Baccarat?

One of the most confusing parts of baccarat for beginners is the third-card rule. Fortunately, players do not need to memorise it to participate in standard Punto Banco because the game applies the rules automatically.

Player Third-Card Rules

Player’s Initial Total Action
0–5 Draw one additional card
6–7 Stand
8–9 Natural – both hands stand

Banker Third-Card Rules

If the Player stands on six or seven, the Banker draws on totals of zero to five and stands on six or seven. If the Player draws a third card, the Banker follows the rules below.

Banker’s Initial Total When Banker Draws
0–2 Always draws
3 Draws unless Player’s third card is 8
4 Draws if Player’s third card is 2–7
5 Draws if Player’s third card is 4–7
6 Draws if Player’s third card is 6 or 7
7 Stands
8–9 Natural – both hands stand

What Is a Natural in Baccarat?

A natural occurs when either the Player or Banker hand totals eight or nine from its first two cards. When this happens, no additional cards are drawn.

For example, if the Player receives a five and a four, the total is nine, producing a natural. If the Banker starts with an eight, the Player’s natural nine wins. If both hands have the same total, the round finishes as a tie.

Different Types of Baccarat

Punto Banco

The most common casino baccarat format, using automatic drawing rules and Player, Banker and Tie bets.

Mini Baccarat

A smaller-table presentation of Punto Banco, usually with the same fundamental rules.

Live Dealer Baccarat

Baccarat streamed from a live studio or casino table with a human dealer.

No-Commission Baccarat

Variations that remove the conventional Banker commission but change payouts for certain Banker outcomes.

Chemin de Fer

A traditional variation where participants may make drawing decisions rather than following automatic Punto Banco rules.

Baccarat Banque

A traditional baccarat variation with a different banking structure and player decision rules.

Baccarat Tips for Beginners

Understand the Three Main Bets

Learn how Player, Banker and Tie wagers work before considering any optional side bets.

Check the Commission

Banker bets usually carry a 5% commission in standard Punto Banco. Alternative tables may have different rules.

Know the House Edge

The Banker and Player bets generally have lower house edges than a standard 8:1 Tie bet.

Ignore Previous Streaks

A series of Banker or Player wins does not reliably predict the outcome of the next round.

Be Careful with Side Bets

Optional bets can have different payouts and substantially different house edges.

Use Personal Limits

Decide how much time and money you can afford to spend and stop if gambling begins to cause stress.

Common Baccarat Mistakes to Avoid

Confusing Player with the Bettor

The Player hand is simply one of the two hands dealt. It does not represent your personal cards.

Assuming Tie Bets Are Better

The larger Tie payout comes with a much lower probability of winning and a higher standard house edge.

Following Scoreboard Patterns

Historical Banker and Player results cannot reliably predict future hands.

Chasing Losses

Increasing stakes to recover earlier losses can quickly increase financial exposure.

Ignoring Table Variations

No-commission and side-bet baccarat games may use different payouts and rules.

Believing in Guaranteed Systems

No staking system can eliminate the house edge or guarantee baccarat profits.

How to Play Baccarat FAQs

How do you play baccarat for beginners?

Choose Player, Banker or Tie before the cards are dealt. Two hands are then dealt and scored automatically. The hand closest to nine wins, or the result is a tie.

What is the objective of baccarat?

The objective is to predict which hand will finish closer to nine, or whether both hands will finish with the same total.

Is baccarat easier to learn than blackjack?

Standard Punto Banco requires fewer player decisions because the drawing rules are automatic. Blackjack generally offers more decisions during each hand.

What does Banker mean in baccarat?

Banker is the name of one of the two hands. Betting on Banker means predicting that this hand will win.

Why does the Banker bet pay less?

The Banker hand has a slightly higher probability of winning than the Player hand under standard Punto Banco rules. Casinos commonly apply a 5% commission to Banker winnings.

What happens when baccarat ends in a tie?

A successful Tie bet is paid according to the table rules. Standard Player and Banker bets are normally returned without profit or loss.

What is a natural nine in baccarat?

A natural nine occurs when the first two cards total nine using baccarat scoring. No third cards are drawn.

Can you choose to hit or stand in baccarat?

Not in standard Punto Banco. Third-card decisions are determined by fixed rules. Some traditional baccarat variations allow decisions.

Does baccarat involve skill or luck?

Punto Banco outcomes depend on chance. Understanding payouts and house edges can inform betting decisions, but it cannot predict results.

Can you practise baccarat for free?

Yes. The interactive practice game on this page lets you explore baccarat rules without wagering money.
