UK gambling giant Bet365 has been handed financial penalties by the Swedish gambling regulator but has avoided further sanctions, including licence revocation. Two penalties were issued, one worth SEK 40 million, equivalent to approximately £3 million, and a further fine of SEK 4 million. Both penalties relate to violations involving customer care and deposit limits.

These violations date back to between 2019 and 2022, when Bet365 had a feature that allowed players to select a ‘no limit’ option for deposits. This feature has since been updated.

Bet365 stated that there was technically a limit in place, with a hidden cap of SEK 500 million enforced. However, the regulator ruled that this did not meet the requirements for setting an actual deposit limit. Bet365’s gross gaming revenue (GGR) from Swedish sports betting was SEK 724.5 million in 2021, alongside SEK 69 million from gaming. This highlights how significant the hidden deposit limit was compared with the company’s overall GGR.

Bet365 Avoids Licence Revocation

Despite the regulator identifying serious failings, Bet365 received a formal warning and did not have its licence revoked. Players who lose more than SEK 10,000 in a month will now also be subject to a manual review in Sweden, with additional measures introduced to protect vulnerable gamblers. Similar player protection measures have also been introduced across the UK.

Bet365 has also stated that it will suspend or restrict players identified as being at the highest risk of gambling-related harm, representing another step towards addressing problem gambling.

The Swedish gambling regulator continues to take action against gambling companies, meaning Bet365 is unlikely to be the last operator to face regulatory scrutiny. Previous enforcement action has involved brands such as Betsson, ComeOn Group’s Snabbare, Mr Green, ATG and Kanon Gaming.

With Sweden and other regulatory authorities continuing to tighten their requirements, gambling operators will need to keep improving their safer gambling measures to protect players.
